This is the Dittli-Lanz cabin on the Russian River in California. This is a view of the landing, looking upriver. The child is Albin Leo Dittli, being helped by his father, Albin.
Albin had piles driven in, then built the landing around the piles. The added strength of the piles helped the landing survive the annual spring floods. The landing was concrete. There were at least 30 stairs leading from the landing to the cabin. Each Spring the mud had to be cleared from the landing and the stairs.
Origanlly the house did not have a basement. Albin Dittli raised the house, adding the basement-garage underneath. One Spring, befor the house was raised, Lillian Lanz-Dittli was able to swimm into the house. After the house was raised, the river never flooded the house again, though it did flood the garage several times.
